Dissent. Vol. 5, No. 3. New York: Dissent Publishing Association, Summer 1958. Wrappers, approx. 96 pp. Dissent was founded by Irving Howe and Lewis Coser in 1954 and quickly established itself as one of America's leading intellectual journals and a mainstay of the democratic left. This Summer 1958 issue falls in the magazine's fifth year, during the period when it was defining the independent democratic socialist position in American intellectual life — distinct from both Stalinism and Cold War liberalism. Arnold Hauser (1892–1978) — Hungarian art historian and sociologist; author of The Social History of Art (1951).
