Turn off the protein skimmer and leave it off for a minimum of seven days. Remove any chemical filtration like granular activated carbon for the duration of the treatment. As the algae die and decompose, phosphate levels may spike. Therefore phosphate absorbents like GFO (Granular Ferric Oxide) should be used to control rising phosphate levels within the aquarium.
