F97936~ American Camera MFG Co. 1894 Buckeye Box [Very Scarce] This is a really nice example with a fully working shutter, original strap handle, and the unique brass rotating aperture wheel. The lens has haze and dust – I did not remove the existing partially used roll film to clean it. DESCRIPTION – This is the very scarce 1894 Buckeye camera manufactured by the American Camera Manufacturing Company in Northborough, Massachusetts.  This is a really nice example with a fully working shutter, original strap handle, and the unique brass rotating aperture wheel.  The lens has haze and dust – I did not remove the existing partially used roll film to clean it.  HISTORY – In 1892, Samuel N. Turner, founder of the Boston Camera Manufacturing Company, patented and introduced the paper-backed roll film.  They produced the "Bulls-Eye" camera design using the roll film approach and an innovative red window on the camera back so users could see the frame numbers while winding the film.  Two years later, the American Camera MFG Co. released this Buckeye box camera.  The next year (1895), it was followed by the Buckeye No. 2 box camera and then some horizontal Buckeye folding roll film cameras and the Tourist Buckeye.  In 1898, George Eastman acquired the American Camera MFG Company along with several others and moved them to Rochester, New York.  VERY SCARCE – This is the only example of this first Buckeye box camera that I ever encountered for my collection.  Bullseye No. 2 model is reasonably available and can be found on eBay occasionally.  At the time of developing this description, a review of available eBay sales data (3 years) found only one sale of this camera in August 2024, and it was misidentified as a Buckeye No. 2.
